Tão risível quanto achar que aqueles meninos militantes de movimento estudantil que fizeram os protestos são “orquestrados por Cuba”, como perpetraram alguns jornalistas brasileiros, é achar que é culpa dos Estados Unidos que Yoani Sánchez, uma mera blogueira, tenha se tornado a principal voz da oposição ao regime dos Castro. Sorry, mas a história não é bem essa.

Imaginem se eu, aqui no meu blog, começasse a falar mal do Brasil (como, felizmente, estamos livres para fazer em nosso país). Que não existe liberdade de expressão, que a internet é lenta, que as pessoas não podem protestar na rua livremente, que as condições de vida no país são precárias, coisas do tipo. Daí o governo Dilma Rousseff começa a me perseguir. Vigia meus passos e me impede de sair do país, por exemplo, o que passo a denunciar com frequência. O que aconteceria? Obviamente eu, uma simples blogueirinha, me tornaria cada vez mais conhecida. Viraria a vítima do governo de esquerda mau.

Agora imaginem se em Cuba, como em qualquer país comunista desde a revolução de 1917 na Rússia, não fosse proibido divergir, este erro crasso da esquerda mundial. Se em Cuba qualquer pessoa pudesse abrir um blog ou fazer um jornal alternativo e criticar o governo, porque sim. Porque acha ruim a forma como se “elege” o presidente ou porque acha que o governo deveria dar menos açúcar e mais arroz na provisão do que os habitantes do país recebem. Ou, sei lá, simplesmente porque pensa “hay gobierno, soy contra”. Yoani Sánchez seria a blogueira mais famosa de Cuba ou apenas uma a mais?

E se o governo cubano tivesse deixado Yoani viajar na primeira de suas 20 tentativas? Será que se falaria tanto dela fora da ilha? Será que conseguiria tantos adeptos à sua causa ao redor do mundo? Quantos ecoaram sua voz de protesto contra a “prisão” em que vivia? Qual foi o raio de alcance de seu pedido de resgate? Através da internet, como milhões de mensagens atiradas ao mar em garrafas virtuais, enquanto Yoani permanecia em Cuba, sua queixa chegava a toda parte. Injustiças costumam atrair a solidariedade de muitos. E era uma injustiça que não a deixassem exercer seu sagrado direito de ir e vir. Ou não?

Na noite de segunda-feira 18, em Feira de Santana, na Bahia, cerca de 100 pessoas se reuniam para assistir a um documentário sobre a blogueira cubana quando a sala onde seria exibido o filme foi invadida por militantes de esquerda histéricos, que acabaram por encurralar a moça numa sala durante 40 minutos aos gritos de “traidora!”. O senador Eduardo Suplicy teve que interceder energicamente para acalmar a turba furiosa e permitir que Yoani Sánchez pudesse falar com a plateia. De forma educada, sem alterar o tom de voz, ela respondeu a todas as perguntas que lhe foram feitas, inclusive pelos manifestantes contrários à sua presença no Brasil. Quem se saiu bem desse episódio?

Graças à superexposição na mídia que o protesto desrespeitoso e intolerante rendeu, na noite seguinte, em vez dos gatos pingados da véspera, quase 2 mil pessoas lotaram um auditório para escutar Yoani. Gente que mal compreendia o espanhol falado pela jornalista, mas que aplaudia entusiasticamente cada frase que ela pronunciava. Os estudantes mudaram seu comportamento e dedicaram-se a se inscrever para um misto de pergunta/discurso pró-Cuba no debate, mas era tarde: a antipatia que geraram com a manifestação se fez notar. As pessoas que foram ouvir a cubana vaiavam em coro os mesmos que a tinham vaiado antes. Um rapaz foi brindado com um urro de “palhaço! palhaço! palhaço!” uníssono no salão.

Será que se tivessem feito uma manifestação educada e deixado Yoani Sánchez expor seu pensamento de forma democrática, os militantes juvenis teriam atraído tamanha atenção dos habitantes de Feira de Santana para uma blogueira cubana? Mas e a mídia, vocês me perguntarão, também não teve o seu papel, insuflando Yoani, dando-lhe espaço e colunas em jornais? Ora, o que vocês esperam da “mídia burguesa”? Que ela dê espaço a revolucionários de esquerda favoráveis ao socialismo? Obviamente a imprensa adorou a confusão toda, perfeita para pespegar o rótulo de trogloditas antidemocráticos que tanto adora carimbar na esquerda –neste caso, com sua própria ajuda.

É cômodo acreditar que Yoani ataca Cuba porque é financiada pelos Estados Unidos e não porque tem críticas reais ao regime. Pode ser que ela receba mesmo dinheiro norte-americano, quem sabe? Mas quem a financia de fato é Cuba e a esquerda arcaica que ainda não perceberam, 22 anos após o fim da União Soviética, que cercear a liberdade de expressão de quem quer que seja é sua pior anti-propaganda.

This combination of signifiers serves to reinforce the feminine stereotype through Jean Paul Gaultier’s corset, rather than subverting the feminine ideal. In this costume Madonna becomes the fetishised subject of the male gaze. The duality of the garment is a clear indicator of the various ways in which fashion and dress can be read, as well as the way it ultimately still supports the constructed female gender identity despite trying to subvert it. It also shows that the reading of fashion can be influenced by the body and any pre existing signs which a garment or image may refer to. At times these references are clearly apparent.

This example in particular highlights femininity as a construction being based on appearance not physical ability. The appearance of a long leg is considered superior to being able to actually utilize it. This unhealthy focus on women’s appearance rather than their physical ability and health has been perpetrated by the fashion industry for decades. One of the dominant messages that fashion conveys is that women should be thin (Macdonald, 1995, p201).

    Fashion perpetuates the image of the slender woman being the ideal feminine and can sometimes have significantly detrimental effects. Due to the mass production of clothing, it has become easier for the fashion industry to encourage women to be slender (Macdonald, 1995, p208). Many of the most fashionable garments are not made larger than a woman’s Australian size fourteen. This encourages women to diet and exercise in order to lose weight, a trend also encouraged by the many advertisements involving slender women. One disturbing result of society’s fascination with being thin has been the rise in eating disorders, including anorexia (Macdonald, 1995, p208). In Australia’s November 2004 issue of Cosmopolitan an article was run entitled ‘Anorexia for Sale’. This article discussed Mary Kate Olson, a well known actress, and her public struggle with Anorexia Nervosa. Images of Olsen and other famous women who appear to be unhealthily thin, such a Kate Moss, have been used on websites known as ‘pro ana’ sites, that is, websites supporting anorexia as a ‘lifestyle choice’ as opposed to an illness (Percival, 2004, p62). Many of these sites have begun to sell ‘ana bracelets’ and ‘ana necklaces’ which are a means of identifying other anorexics and which serve as a reminder not to eat. This jewellery has proven quite popular within the anorexic community (Percival, 2004, p62). This is an extreme example of fashion (or in this case accessories) being used to specifically propagate the idea of being thin. On the other hand clothing can also be used to raise awareness of eating disorders and encourage women not to go so far. T shirts with the slogan ‘Save Mary Kate’ and a drawing of her emaciated figure were released with just this intention (Percival, 2004, p62). Released when Mary Kate began her rehabilitation, the emaciated drawing on the t shirts is far from attractive and draws attention to her bones and the unnaturalness of being so thin. The words ‘Save Mary Kate’ could be read in one of two ways however, they could refer to the fact that she is need of help, thus constructing her as a victim, or they could be referring to the desirability of her image and a wish that she remain so thin, thus the implication could be ‘Save Mary Kate from the rehabilitation clinic’. This second reading is supported by the image itself, in which she is smiling and returning the gaze of the viewer. This subverts the intended message that she is a victim.

    Judith Butler has been an influential figure in the study of whether gender is a construction or inherent. By encoding specific garments and styles as either feminine or masculine, it becomes much clearer what gender someone is because their appearance (and as such part of their gender identity) is expected to coincide with their sexual identity. In this way, what is considered masculine and feminine in regards to dress is also a social construction. As fashion is primarily considered a feminine concern (, it is through examples of the female gender identity that fashions influence can best be seen.
